The purpose of this FAQ is to deal soley with questions regarding the Runic Ring itself - not the topics it covers on the list.

This FAQ was created on 16 April 2001 by and is maintained by Psyche.

If you feel something has not been adaquatly covered here, or in the welcome message sent to you upon subscription to the Ring, then please feel free to send a message either to myself, Psyche, the list owner, or send a message to all moderators, depending on how specific your question.

This FAQ was last updated 01 April 2002.

02.0 So what's the Runic Ring about anyway?

This list is intended for those interested in discussing Wicca, Witchcraft, Druidism, Paganism, Satanism, Shamanism, ceremonial magick, chaos magick, philosophy, theory, divination, magick, spellwork, ritual, theology, lore, story telling and other related topics.

If you're interested in learning more, please feel free to join the list.

^ to Contents

02.1 What topics are covered?

Contrary to what the name suggests, the Runic Ring is not just about runes, or rings. It actually covers a wide variety of related topics. (Though we do visit that topic often - especially when new members join asking about this or that rune.)

This list does mainly focus on philosophy, spirituality and the occult, but that covers a LOT of things. This means we cover a LOT of topics. There's not much that's not covered by this description when you get right down to it.

We've covered a lot before (this list has been around since '97) and we don't mind revisiting them again as new blood often comes with new insights.

Many on the list are very experienced in their craft or trade, and all are willing to share, hence the motto of the list: Share what you know. Learn what you don't.

^ to Contents

02.2 What topics are not covered?

Though the list does cover a lot, there are some things that should obviously be listed as 'off topic'. Off topic posts will not get you kicked off the list, but unless there is major participation from many members of the list and it is somehow relevant or interesting, please keep it to a minimum.

There are two possible courses of action to take for off topic posts. Some may contain the header 'OT' (Off Topic), examples might relate to current events in a given country that affect the rest of the list that someone posts a concern about. Then again, there are some topics that should be discussed off of the list entirely. Some examples might be two (or more) friends who know each other offline who are discussing something personal that happened over the weekend that has nothing to do with the rest of the list. This should not even be marked 'OT', but taken immediately off the list.

03.0 How do I subscribe to the Runic Ring?

There are many ways to go about subscribing, the simplest being to send a blank e-mail to RunicRing-subscribe@topica.com from the e-mail address from which you wish to subscribe.

On the main page for the Runic Ring, there is also a text box into which you can place your e-mail address then hit subscribe.

^ to Contents

03.1 What are the subscription options?

You may recieve individual e-mails, which is individual e-mails sent to the address you signed up with; daily digest, which sends many messages in one big e-mail, totaled up from the amount that are sent to the list throughout the day; no e-mail, which sends you no e-mail, but your address is still subscribed to the list, this option indicates that you'd prefer to read the messages either on the web, or that you are too busy for the list at the moment, but may rejoin conversation by digest or individual e-mails in the future.

No matter which mode you chose, as long as you are still subscribed to the list, you can post from the address you originally signed up under.

^ to Contents

03.2 How can I change or add e-mail addresses subscribed to the list?

Sign in, and go to 'My Topica'. You will then see on the left hand side a link that says 'Email Addresses', click it and you will see which addresses you are subscribed under, and to which lists. Halfway down the page you should see a grey box that says 'New Address' on it. There you can add up to four new addresses at a time. Any new addresses you add will need to be verified.

If you try posting from an address that is not subscribed or added as an alterante address it will not make it through. We have disabled that option to prevent spammers from making it through to the list and annoying the hell out of everyone.

^ to Contents

03.3 How do I unsubscribe?

You can either send a blank mail to RunicRing-unsubscribe@onelist.com from the address you are subscribed under.

Whichever option you choose, please do not send 'Help, unsubscribe me' messages to the list. You were clever enough to get on, you should be clever enough to shove off.

^ to Contents

04.0 Ok, I signed up, now how do I post?

Send a message from any of the addresses you subscribed under or added to RunicRing@topica.com.

Alternatively, you can post from the Topica web-reading page by clicking on 'Post', a yellow button at the top right of the page which should pop up a window in which to type. Merely write your message and hit send.

05.0 What are the Runic Ring rules?

The list doesn't have any rules that go beyond the bounds of common decency and common sense.

I've decided to break the rules down into sections to make it easier to cover each topic adaquately. Some are enforced, some are general nettiquette things that wont get you kicked off or banned, but will annoy people if you don't follow them.

^ to Contents

05.1 Is spamming allowed?

Spamming entails everything from 'buy my Tarot cards' to 'visit my site' to 'join my new coven' when advertising is not specifically requested.

This is the number one most important rule. I hate spammers and they will not be tolerated. In many cases it may result in an immediate ban from the list.

If you have any questions as to what is allowed and what isn't, please contact the moderators at RunicRing-owner@topica.com.

^ to Contents

05.2 Can I send this really kewl chain letter?

No.

First offence and you will be warned.

Second offence you will be kicked off, meaning you will be forcefully removed from the list.

Strike three results in a ban, meaning you will be kicked off the list, and never, ever allowed back.

It just ain't happenin'.

^ to Contents

05.3 Is hate mail allowed?

Harsh language, swearing, curt or crude comments, all these things are allowed provided they are used within a sensible context and there is content in the post.

Please note, there is a huge difference between calling someone a shitheaded twinky and informing them of what you think the real deal is and just calling someone a shithead twinky. One is acceptible, and one is not.

Do realize that this does not describe the majority of posters, most prefer to post diplomatically and some may get offended, though it wont get you banned.

Hate mail can be sent off the list, we don't care what happens there, it's out of our jurisdiction.

However, if anyone is having persistent problems with any list member please feel free to e-mail us at RunicRing-owner@topica.com and we will see what we can do.

05.4 Are oneliners allowed?

A 'oneliner' is when someone posts a comment that is only one line and/or is completely useless to the thread being repiled to. Common examples are 'Yeah, I agree', 'You're wrong moron', 'Wow, me too', etc. Completely useless as they contribute nothing.

They are not encouraged, but they wont get you kicked. You may get asked to shut up if you start posting too many of them however, either by a moderator or another member of the list.

^ to Contents

05.5 Is it ok to post in all capital letters?

You wont get kicked or banned for it, but it's bloody annoying and everyone will make fun of you.

TYPING IN ALL CAPS is considered yelling, and rude. It is difficult on many people's eyes, and some just hate the look of it.

Please don't do it.

^ to Contents

06.0 Are there any restrictions?

Not really, Topica doesn't have many features to support any. But at least it's not Yahoo!.

^ to Contents

07.0 Are there any extra things I should be aware of?

Not really, Topica doesn't have many features to support any. But at least it's not Yahoo!.

^ to Contents

07.1 What's the deal with those profile things?

They are completely optional, just something to fill out if you don't feel like writing an introductory letter, or don't know what to say. They are all forwarded to the list so that members can get an idea of who is joining, their interests, etc.

If you'd like to fill one out, just visit: http://books.dreambook.com/covenmoon/profiles.sign.html, fill out the form, and it will be forwarded to the list for you.

To view other's profiles, visit: http://books.dreambook.com/covenmoon/profiles.html.

They never get deleted. Ever.

They can be viewed by anyone with Internet access. Be careful what you put in there.
